A Broken Beak

Did you know chickens can break their beak? I didn’t either until one evening when I was checking on the chickens and found Trudy in the egg hutch making weird sounds and then I discovered a dent on her beak. But don’t worry because it’s normal to break a beak and chickens will grow their beaks back as long as the crack is not too big. Usually chickens break their beaks from collisions, fighting, grooming, digging, exploring, eating, or pecking. What do you think happened?

  1. I think from pecking! What is Trudy’s personality like? Is she the type of chicken to get in a fight?

    1. I think it was pecking to because she is on the bottom of the pecking order and can be a little shy sometimes.

Maybe she tried to peck the mural? :)

  3. I wonder if it will grow out like a chipped fingernail? That would be good.

  4. I think it was a peck too. Who might have done it? Good thing Trudy has you looking out for her.

    1. Me too. I think it was Love, the second highest on the pecking order and the one who likes to peck the most.

  5. Oh no! Does a broken beak hurt for the chicken?

    1. I have never had a chicken break it’s beak but I have had a injured chicken so I do know they stay away from the flock and she is kind of hiding so yes.
