Trudy taking a dust bath
This is a dust bath. Chickens take dust baths to cool down and clean up. Dust baths are when a chicken digs a hole until it gets wet enough, gets in it and rolls around in it. Sometimes there's another chicken to peck things off and the cleaner gets the hidden treats in the other chicken’s feathers and the bathing chicken gets a cleaning! You can usually find chickens doing this in the afternoon when it’s all hot.
Looks nice and dusty!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post Milo! We wonder if chickens like water baths too?
ReplyDeleteThat’s funny! I’ve never tried it, but I do know that they don’t like water.
DeleteNeat article! Is the hole always wet if they dig deep enough?
ReplyDeleteIt’s not always wet but it is usually cold enough to cool them down.
DeleteMilo! This is a great post! Have you noticed whether the same chicken pecks off the treats from Trudy's feathers, or if they take turns? And what kinds of treats are hiding in her feathers? Thanks, this was very informative.
ReplyDeleteThe chickens do take turns sometimes, but they also can find another chicken.
DeleteWhen I was a child, about Niko’s age, I nursed a handicapped chick, every day and evening, for several months until she grown up to adulthood. I love what you do for chickens.
ReplyDeleteAhhh, it’s so cute seeing Trudy enjoying a nice dust bath. Sometimes I start to panic because I see a limp pile of feathers, but it’s just one of the girls who fell asleep in the dirt! They are such funny little creatures.
ReplyDeleteGood info! Milo, I miss you and your chickens! ❤️
ReplyDeleteHi Milo! From beginning of your chicken project, we have had a challenging question, “ What came first, chicken? or eggs? “. Should we discuss in your group for answers?
ReplyDeleteI think eggs maybe…
